 Benque Viejo del Carmen is located at the far west of the country and is the nearest town to the Guatemalan border. It is less than 1 hour going east to Belmopan, the capital of Belize, and another hour to Belize City, the commercial capital. From the border, it is approximately 60 miles to the tourist island of Flores, Peten, Guatemala and another 30 minutes to the famous Maya ruins of Tikal. From Flores, it is an easy drive to anywhere in Guatemala and indeed, to any of the other Central American countries. Incidentally, there are no civil troubles in Guatemala and the other countries now and tourists regularly drive throughout all of Central America to view the many splendid Maya sites and other many tourist attractions.
